I LOVE long names, and I’m not a fan of nicknames. Long names are stunning and don’t need to be shortened. My favorites 9 letters or more:
Alexandra
Anastasia
Andromeda
Bellatrix
Genevieve
Josephine
Kassandra
Seraphina
Stephanie
I do like long names, several of my children have a long name (first, middle or both). I generally prefer them without nicknames, and if they do have a nickname I prefer them to come around naturally/spontaneously instead of being planned. Some of my favorite long names are Vindemiatrix, Mehetabel, Rosemonde, Bethshalom, Yehosheva and Magdalena for girls, and for boys Yechezkel, Odysseus, Maccabee, Benjamin, Astrophel, Barzillai and Artavasdes.
I don't focus on the length of names, but it happens that I tend to like long names better.Consolación, Mathildis, Crescentia, Ruxandra, Magnolia, Violetta, Athanasia, Boglárka, Magdalina, Trendafilka, Malamatenia, Florella, Varinder, Cyprianne, Sardinia, Orlaithe, Ellianna, Matahari, Klemátisz, Calamanda.Estienne, Konstantin, Ladislas, Yeruslan, Alexandre, Silvester, Leviathan, Hammurabi, Melchior, Napoleon, Coriolan, Yibrahim, Eunician, Betsalel, Servusdei, Laurentio, Olimpiade, Basileus, Kalogreant, Castille.
My reasoning is similar to what Obetsy posted. I prefer to give a longer and more formal name to a child, with a fun or cute nickname for when they are with family or friends. At least once they become adult, they can use the longer name on their resume or in a more formal setting. I know not everyone agrees. It's really just a personal preference. And to be fair, some nicknames have now become pretty common and wide-spread names (Alex comes to mind). According to my PNL, my longest favorite names are 10 letters:
Emmanuelle (nn Manu or Many)
Evangeline (nn Evie)
Maristella (I'd probably just shorten it to Mari)
Marguerite (nn Margot)
Marjolaine (nn Marjo)
Maximilien (nn Max).
I generally prefer medium-length names (5-7 letters) but between long and short names I lean more towards long ones. Some of my favorite long names are Montgomery, Ellington, Persephone, and Gwendolyn.
I prefer short names, my kids names are 3, 4, 5 letters for first names. Longer for mn. I prefer full names rather than nn. Isabella is nice as a long name or Anastasia
I love long names aesthetically, as in they look magical when written out on paper, in stories, or on a birth certificate. The problem is that in real life I may find them impractical because after a while people tend to shorten them. It's been a long time since I've met an Alexander or Alexandra who did not go by Alex. I love long names in theory, but I know real life would have other plans. That being said, I am a big fan of Anastasia and Wilhelmina.
I think I tend to like long names. I think that to be able to have it formal for a wedding is nice and then you can have a nickname. My kids are all 3 syllables plus. I would prefer Gwendolyn and calling her Gwen or Kathrine and calling her Kate or Rebecca and calling her Becca. Gianna could be G or Gia, not much you can do if your named Jo and don't like it... Isabel could be Izzy Bell or something else. Not that I don't like short names but I like when they can sound formal. I do like Beau although I would likely spell it Bo for family reasons. I'm trying to think of another short name I like. Emmeline, Evelyn are favorites of mine. Anne might be a favorite short name. I'll have to think if there are others
I do really like Quinn and Jude which are 1 syllable
