WDYT of Holland?
What do you think of the girl's name Holland?

I always think that certain place names sound as if the person has never been there. And it sounds a little ignorant to name your child after a place you've never set foot in. For example, I cringe at the way the name Skye is perceived in the States: as "sky" with a cutesy, redundant "e" ending. I love it as a proper name, referring to the beautiful island. Although the connotations are very different in Scotland (it's seen as a classier name, and associated with the placename), this still depresses me. Another example is London. Getting a little fashionable, but I'm convinced anyone who names DS/DD London as not been there! It's the most impersonal place, and I've never liked it at all. I'm sure some people do ... It's just that I imagine people naming their daughters have a romanticized view of the place. Does Holland mean anything to you? Have you been there? If so, I don't dislike it, although it doesn't really work as a name to me.
too placey for me

But maybe, if we live in a trendy 2045 my grandchildren, who will be living in the USA or Aussie, might be called Holland...but urgh!
