What is Semaj?
I’ve seen Semaj on the popularity charts before and I always assumed it was an ethnic name. But I guess this is just James backwards. Where did this come from?

Don't know where it originated, but there's a Sims youtuber I watch called James Turner. In his Sims playthoughs, he names his simself Semaj whenever he includes a simself. I am unclear if this started sometime around the Get to Work expansion which includes a scientist career where you can make a cloning machine. This machine can not only clone a sim, but has the potential to clone an evil sim. Not sure if he started using Semaj after a cloning machine incident, and used it to differentiate his sim from that sim. I also knew a Samuel who wanted to go by Leumas during the time I knew him (2010 - 2013), but it didn't work. He was creepy and liked to touch the girls in our class in a way that made us feel uncomfortable and continued to do it after we asked him not to. We called him Sweaty Sam. There might have been a trend at some point for backwards names around that time for some reason because I'm not entirely convinced he was alone in it.
It is James spelled backward and is primarily used in the African-American community. It was first popularized by an obscure R&B singer whose first album was released in 1999, the same year Semaj first made the top thousand names on the SSA list.https://www.amazon.com/Semaj-Here-Album/dp/B000UXUJYOhttps://open.spotify.com/album/2U3848Q2uVjzkgHfzMoOQ7
Apparently thats exactly what it is - James spelt backwards.. lol. Not a fan. This would probably be better on the Facts board next time.
Whatever it is, I don't like it one bit.
There is a basketball player and a kid influencer with the name of Semaj (James spelled backwards). It's almost as bad as Nevaeh (Heaven spelled backwards). I've never understood why anyone would want to spell a name or word backwards.
For all I know, it could still be an ethnic name. It looks sort of Arabic maybe.
But my guess is it got started when someone wanted to name their kid after Dad, who was James, but didn't want a Junior or a Jamesetta or a Jamie.
Probably some celebrity of the moment did it, like with Nevaeh.
