Names that you don't understand
Are there any names you just don't get? Names that made the top 100 (or maybe top 150 or so) that make you wonder why they're popular, even when you try to see them from an objective point of view?
I don't mean names that you just dislike. But names that you just don't get the popularity of, even when you try to be objective. Maybe the others can reply and say why they think the name became popular, if they have a different point of view.
I'll start, by just giving one example. I will add more in a separate post later.
Jocelyn - I personally don't think it has an attractive sound, but even trying from an objective point of view I don't really get it. It seems to harsh and abrupt to have landed in the top 100 when it did, along with all the soft, vowel-heavy names. It would have fit much better in the 1940s along with Judith, Judy, Marilyn and Carolyn.

Peggy..it’s so close to piggy! I just don’t think it sounds nice, especially for a girl!!
I never thought about Jocelyn that way but now that I think about it, I agree. It was popular for my generation after Marilyn, Carolyn, Evelyn, etc. were already "mom names" and I don't know why!
I don't get why Harper is popular for girls, it seems like a name that would be more popular for boys. And it's so different from the other girls names ranked at the top of the US list. The popular girls names seem like mostly a list of hyperfeminine styles with a sprinkling of very tomboyish names with not a lot in between. Madison, Riley, Avery, Harper, Addison, Parker, Sloane .. Madison and Addison seem somewhat feminine at first because I'm used to them being girls names, but sound-wise they're really just unisex or masculine.
I think Ezra is cool but I'm surprised that it's popular. The consonants are more complicated than most popular names, and the overall sound is quite feminine. I'm also surprised about Ezekiel, but maybe "Ez" is popular?
I'm also surprised about Genesis - it doesn't seem very namey, but Gen sounds like Jen and I suppose I see the appeal of the "-is" ending.
I definitely don't understand Everleigh or any kind of -leigh, and not just because I hate it.
Never understood the appeal of Jaxson. I can see how Jaxon sounds like Jackson but the pronunciation of Jaxson doesn't even make sense. It would be so lispy. The one I know just pronounces it Jackson but it still looks wrong.
I also don't understand why the full name Ellie is so popular. I would expect anyone called Ellie to have a different full name, even if it's just Ella. It would be weird to me to meet someone whose full formal name was Ellie, but apparently it's very common? I just don't understand what makes someone want to name their kid Ellie instead of Ella "Ellie", Eleanor "Ellie", Eliana "Ellie", [any ___elle name] "Ellie"... ? There are so many options, why would you make your baby have a kiddie name for their whole life?

Vanessa and Jessica became popular around the time the “ss” sound/spelling was trendy, so I think that’s why. Jessica probably seemed similar to Jennifer too, which was popular just before. I think Susan was seen as attractive when it was popular, as most of those names have similar (ugly) vibes to me. I’ve got nothing for Rebecca—that name is just not good and doesn’t fit any trends.
Really don't understand mc/mac/son names on girls or the current fad for rando surnames as fn on anyone even when they have no familial connection. How are these at all attractive or appealing?
Perfect!

I still like Jocelyn. I taught a pleasant girl once - diligent, polite, good at sport - named Jocelyn and that helped. Then a year or so later I found her working behind the counter at a branch of my bank that I usually didn't go to. We were happy to see each other, exchanged news - and then I noticed that round her neck she wore a gold chain with her name in gold letters at the bottom. Except, the name down there next to her collar was not Jocelyn but Jossie. What a disappointment!
I don't think it reached the top 100 (or 150 for that matter), but I have seen Braxton getting popular here and there. I just don't understand. All I can think of are Braxton-Hicks contractions.
I also was never a fan of the ''den'' names. Aiden, Kaiden, Jayden, Braiden, Zaden, Holden, etc. Sorry. I don't know how to explain it, I just don't think it sounds that nice.

Chloe, Kinsley, Madelyn, Madison, Addison, Naomi, Grace, Genesis, Jaxon / Jaxson / Jaxxon, Quinn, Remi, Parker (especially for girls), Carter, Tanner (weird job name), Crystal, Skylar, Freya, Sloane, Pearl, Layla (just boring), Lucy, Petra, Eveline, Adalynn, Luna, Scarlett, Emily, Nova, Grayson, Jayden, Walker, Amy, Brooks, Nash, Raelynn, Beau, Peyton, Reese, Blakely, Kaitlyn, Kaydence, Collins, Mackenzie, Mckayla, Mckenna, Ember, Kyler, Dakota, Coty, Blair, Sydney, Evie (basic), Eve (even more basic), Adelaide,

I love Madelyn and Scarlett, and there are some other really good names on the list. But you got a lot of the bad ones on there as well.
Good is a matter of opinion.
Dang, that's a lot of names.
Ethan, Aaliyah and Abigail for example.
I don’t understand why parents have to get creative with spellings of names.
Hayleigh
Bryttanie
Kelleigh
Jaysen
Kathrynne
Kaidynce
Jaxxon
I also don’t like titular names such as Earl, Duke, Queenie, Baron, and Prince/Princess.

Wow, you basically got everything. You have good taste!
Mc-names. Really don’t get the appeal.
Also Noah becoming so popular everywhere. It’s not a bad name but feels just… idk a bit inconsistent?

I have no idea how Owen got to #18 in the United States. Not only does it sound ugly, it also feels so elderly - I can't imagine a baby Owen. What contributed to its popularity? I'm baffled to see it rank so high.
For girls - Zoey. I do not see the appeal of that spelling at all. What's wrong with Zoe? Does anyone genuinely think Zoey looks better or is more intuitive? It's #45.

I think Zoey looks better.
I actually like Jocelyn, and I think it became popular because of its -lyn ending.
Firstly, I understand that Knox grew in popularity thanks to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but sounds too modern and incomplete to be bestowed on a real child. It works fine in fiction, though.
Messiah is a religious title - why does it have to be used as a name? It's too flashy.
Bentley is just a mishmash of random sounds. There are better -ley names out there.
Jayce is too... different? I don't really like "y" spellings as in Ayden, Mayson, Jayson - they butcher the name. Jace is better, but it lacks charm.
Like Messiah, Legend is tawdry and pretentious. What is up with these haughty names?
Jaxson's spelling is unnecessary. Jaxon is ten times better - newfangled, but understandable.
Colton sounds generic. Its sound isn't attractive either.
I don't understand Jameson. It looks like an elaboration of James rather than the derivation from the surname.
Walker has to be one of the most insubstantial occupational-surnames-turned-names I've ever seen. The occupation is not bad per se, but the meaning is predictable.
I don't understand what is so special about James, though. It needs a break.
As for Journee, what is the point of misspelling common words? It doesn't make the name better.
-leigh spellings are extra. Other people would have difficulty in spelling the name thanks to Ryleigh or Everleigh.

I don't understand Nevaeh. I know it's heaven backwards, but... Why? What's the appeal of spelling a word backwards, calling it a name and saying that it has the meaning of the original word? Just use Heaven. And I honestly have no idea whatsoever of how to pronounce it.

It’s said “Neh-vay-uh”. I like the sound, but totally agree the spelling is weird.
It sounds like Nivea (the skin care brand) in my accent.
I don’t see Jocelyn as harsh or abrupt. It has quite a soft sound, has the trendy -lyn suffix and begins similar to Josephine. It has no hard consonants.
I don’t get:
Wyatt - why at?
Waylon - not sure what annoys me, maybe way long
Brooks - it looks like a plural of Brook
Axel - sounds violent or like a car part
Luna - lunatic, and it just stands out as too wordy
Genesis - way too Biblical and wordy

I like Wyatt, but I see your point. Luna is a name I like in a guilty way. Otherwise, perfect list of names
Huh, Luna being wordy is interesting. It seems so short and simple.
Most modern names, both boys and girls, I don't understand from an objective standpoint.
Many of them just sound like a mishmash of different syllables. In particular: Amara, Kinsley, Kyler, Raiden, Waylon
I also don't get the popularity of certain word names. I feel like it would be really weird and uncomfortable for a kid to be called something like Legend, Legacy, Messiah, or Royalty.
Also, what's up with the male name Gael? It strikes me as a very dated name.

Evelyn. It's not a bad name. But I don't understand why *this* name in particular has been rising since the late 80s and now is in the top 10. Why do so many people think it's so great when similar names are considered ugly and old fashioned? It baffles me.
I think it coincides with the rise of Ev- and Av- names, like Ava, Eva, Evie, Everly, Aviana, etc. Plus, it has the trendy -lyn ending.

Ditto on Jocelyn. Maybe it’s because I’ve never met one irl but it seems unappealing to me and I’m always surprised when I see it on a list.
I also don’t get why Liam is number one. I understand it sounds nice and all but is it really THAT great? How does it appeal to so many different parents? I don’t get it.

My guess is it seems like a modern form of William. It also helps that a One Direction member has the name.
