Arwen
Thoughts on Arwen? Usable?

Replies

Definitely usable and very pretty sounding, but I still prefer Elowen or Anwen.
It's usable. I worked with a gal named Arwen. It seemed pretty ordinary after a short time.
I would rather it were spelled Aruen. The w sound is too strong for me in Arwen. If I could I'd pop back in time and change it for Tolkien.
Aruen is interesting. If I saw that with no context I would read it as a 3-syllable boys name.
Don't really like it, doesn't sound right. I wouldn't use it
It's certainly useable, but I prefer other similar names to it such as Anwen and Elowen.
I barely think of the character. It reminds me of Arianwen, Anwen, Arden - but simpler than Arianwen, more fun to say than Anwen, and more personable than Arden. It's used in the US...about as much as Elowen or Isadora.

I think it's usable because it has a similar sound to names like Olwen, Elowen, Eirwen and Bronwen. It's quite pretty; it sounds natural and magical :)
It's useable, but I never found it very attractive. When I was young, I remember being so disappointed that the "elf princess" (as I thought of her) had such an ugly name. I hate it less now, but I still find it very tepid.
I love names like this, my favorites being Elowen and Bronwen, but Arwen is too elf/fairy-like to me.
I like it, and I would use it with the nickname Ari.
I used to think it was too LOTR for real life, but after I saw some real people named Arwen, it seemed a lot more usable. My only problem with it is that I like the character of Eowyn better as a namesake but that's not as usable without being TOO 'character'.
I prefer Eowyn, too. Not because of the character but because I prefer the etymology. It looks like it's being used...not quite as much as Arwen but twice as much as Browyn + Bronwen + Bronte, or about as much as Tamara gets used these days. I don't think it's necessarily more LOTR than Arwen.
