There was a birth announcement in my town over the weekend: Violet, who I was pleasantly surprised to discover is a boy. At first we all thought it was ridiculous, but the more I think about it, the more I think Violet's a cool, handsome name for a boy. But I feel that way about a lot of names. What do you think?

I wasn't expecting it to work but it does.
I don't like it for a boy. I view -let as feminine. I don't mind flower names for boys, but even Rose and Iris have more boy energy to me.
I have always thought that Violet is very close to Violent and it makes me wonder if the name was accidently misspelled. Otherwise the poor boy is a Johnny Cash song in waiting

I like it, in theory. I can see definitely see Violet on a boy. But obviously people will assume he's a girl when seeing his name, which could be a little annoying for him.
Poor kid. I wouldn't wish it on a girl.

Don't like it for either especially a boy
It could grow on me, but my first reaction is that it sounds like a girl. Just the flower imagery feels 'feminine' even though it doesn't need to.
I know someone who named their baby Violet and deliberately kept from gendering the baby, so I think it was meant to be a gender neutral name, but I kept thinking of the baby as a girl because of the name Violet.

I think it will work well. And personally, I feel the same way about most flower and gem names.
I hope he goes by Vi, I love feminine nicknames on boys.

I hope not. In my experience, people born in February are very pleasant overall. (Violet's also the only leap-year baby I've ever met. Who knew?)
I just mean people are more like to hear/read their name is 'Violent' because they are a boy and Violet is a "girls' name".
Do you know what the middle name was? I'm so curious.
I think it was Alexander or one of its variants.

I mean, considering Violet is technically just a color, there's no reason it can't work on both.
