My mom decided against Trista because the meaning was "sad", but I think I would have made a fine Trista. I WAS pretty sad, after all!

My father wanted me to be Sarah Anne, after his late mother. My mother, who didn't appreciate her MIL at all, tried everything to change his mind, but finally had to settle for a delivery-room lightbulb moment, which I suspect she'd been planning in secret. My mn is Anne, which I'm happy with. I really don't like Sarah at all.
I recently discovered a distant relative on my father's side whose grandfather (my dad's brother) gave his two daughters the names of his sisters as their mns: Ann Florence and Veronica Nellie.
I asked my parents what my name would have been if I'd been a boy, and they looked embarrassed and said that they never considered having a boy and so they never thought of boy names at all. Since both their fathers were named Thomas, nn Tom, I suppose that would have been a good choice. I could imagine a male version of me being Tom.If I'd had a second son, I'd have used Thomas as a mn.

I was very nearly Amanda, and I'm grateful that didn't come to pass. Not only is Amanda super common in my generation, but I can't shake the "A man, duh!" association.
Victoria was also a strong contender. I could've lived with that, as long as Tori stuck as a nickname instead of Vicky (which I loathe).

Rachael is my favorite spelling! I know Rachel is the most common, but to me it has always looked like it's missing something.
Thanks. They spelled it that way because they wanted it to look like Michael. I agree, it is the best spelling. :)
I was almost named Alice after my aunt and godmother but it was used in the middle spot instead.
I was very nearly almost named Ashley, after my mother's favorite uncle. It was changed last minute and I'm glad for it, simply because I like having a lesser used name.
Well, everyone expected me to be named Katrina, because that was my mother's favorite name when she was little and she always named one of her dolls that. (She changed her dolls' names around all the time, but one of them was always Katrina.)
Apparently, though, she never really considered using Katrina for me.
I wouldn't have minded being called Katrina. I will say I would not have enjoyed sharing my name with a hurricane, especially not one so big and destructive. My step-aunt is named Sandy and she said she got tired of hearing how huge she was and what a mess she was making. But that didn't last.

We had a Storm Eleanor recently (aka my wife’s name) and it was indeed briefly amusing 😁
It's highly unlikely there'll ever be a Hurricane Starla, though we do occasionally get that far or further down the alphabet. (In fact, in the same year as Katrina, we had a Hurricane WIlma and had to resort to the Greek alphabet. That was a bad year.)

I recently discovered that my parents were considering Karis for me. I knew my dad wanted to use it for my sister but my mom told me they were also thinking about if for me.
I wish they had used it, it would have fit better with my siblings and the soundy was trendy in the '80s

Ellie’s parents considered Carys / Cerys for her too haha. Her siblings are Matthew and Sarah so either way hers would have been less common than theirs.

Catherine was my dad's top pick. I wouldn't mind it.
