Lemme double check: they were born in Connecticut but their father was an English immigrant from Somerset. Their mom from Rhode Island.

Hm, Rhode Island was exiles/dissenters from Puritan Massachusetts in the 1600s. They were more diverse and tolerant generally.

The backgrounds of the parents could explain the mix of styles. Although it's a mystery to say who was the romantic and who was the conservative! I kind of like that you can't know - gets the imagination going.
