Re: Nicholas
I like Nicholas enough that I would name a son that, if my husband and I didn't agree on anything I liked more. I'm not picky about the spelling but I'd go with Nicholas because it's the most familiar.
Nikolai would seem too borrowed and artificial to me for a child of my own. It's good; I prefer Nicholas personally, but if Nikolai is the name in your language, then obviously that may seem far better for you.People who don't want a nickname can always avoid it if they are assertive.
Parents can't choose that, though. If you name a kid Nicholas, and think he should not be called Nick, but it turns out that he likes to be called Nick and introduces himself as Nick - then your opinion about what people should call him is just wrong. As a parent you would be exempt from using a nickname you don't like, for your own kid, though.
I like Nick, and I think Nichol is good too.
Nicky reads as female to me. I hate Nico, don't mind Colin, and I think Cole seems synthetic but it's okay.
Niko seems less bad and makes more sense if it's a nickname for Nikolai, than if it's for Nicholas.- mirfak
