Nicholas
What are your thoughts on Nicholas? Do you like Nikolas or Nicolas better? What about Nikolai?Do you think Nick and Nicky are avoidable at all?

Replies

One of my favorite classic boy names. I think the nicknames are avoidable. I knew a Nicholas and no one I knew shortened it to anything else, but that might have been because he didn't attend the school long enough to earn a nickname. I like Nikolai but it doesn't make sense for me to use it. I prefer Nicholas anyway. I hate that it sounds like "nickel-less" though.
I like Nicholas it is family last name and first name but if I was to use it then it would definitely be as a middle name. It is possible to avoid a nickname if the individual is assertive but the parents don’t get a choice in that.
I like Nicholas with that spelling; other versions are no doubt fine in their own environment and context.I'd never use Nicholas, though. Family reasons: there was a disastrous marriage that didn't last and should never have happened, and those impressions don't go away.
I like Nicholas enough that I would name a son that, if my husband and I didn't agree on anything I liked more. I'm not picky about the spelling but I'd go with Nicholas because it's the most familiar.
Nikolai would seem too borrowed and artificial to me for a child of my own. It's good; I prefer Nicholas personally, but if Nikolai is the name in your language, then obviously that may seem far better for you.People who don't want a nickname can always avoid it if they are assertive.
Parents can't choose that, though. If you name a kid Nicholas, and think he should not be called Nick, but it turns out that he likes to be called Nick and introduces himself as Nick - then your opinion about what people should call him is just wrong. As a parent you would be exempt from using a nickname you don't like, for your own kid, though.
I like Nick, and I think Nichol is good too.
Nicky reads as female to me. I hate Nico, don't mind Colin, and I think Cole seems synthetic but it's okay.
Niko seems less bad and makes more sense if it's a nickname for Nikolai, than if it's for Nicholas.

Nicholas is one of my favorite names. I would gladly name a son this, with either Nick or Nico being a nickname. I also prefer the H spelling (though I understand how Nicolas and Nikolas work in other languages).Nikolai is a fun one, and what I'd likely go with if I were Slavic.
It's pretty and sparkling and romantic. Makes me think of the doomed Tsar more than Santa Claus. Nicky on a boy would be pretty cute, I think. Plain old Nick is not great, but Nicholas is handsome. I don't think Nick can be avoided, but Nicky probably can be. I never knew a single Nick who was ever called Nicky, at least in my hearing.I like Nikolas too, but not any more than Nicholas. Nicolas is ok... That one is pronounced differently I think, right? It doesn't have the same glittery shine that Nicholas does.
I like Nicholas. It was also the name of a great grandfather, but his name was spelt the French way- Nicolas, a spelling I'm not crazy about.
Nikolai is also a favorite.
Nick is better then Nicky. I personally prefer Nixa as a nickname, especially when it comes to Nikolai. I like it better then Kolya.
Nicholas is okay, but if it were me I prefer nn Nick better and it's bound to be heard somewhere. Nikolai is a nice name too, I like it!
I like Nicolas best then Nicholas, Nick is pretty unavoidable but Cole is another nn. Nikolai is ok
It's certainly a nice name, very sturdy and strong. I like it, but not enough to use it. If I were to however, in a hypothetical sense, I would opt for "Cole" as the nn.
Nick is pretty unavoidable, but that's ok. Nicky might be less so.
I really like the name Nicholas, I'll will be using it in the future as a middle name in honour of my dad as it was his name. It gives me good vibes. Nikolai is really nice aswell. I think people will automatically call a Nicholas Nick or Nicky so it's pretty hard to avoid but not impossible.
I have a brother with this name; he has always gone by Nick. He seems to like his name fine, and has never complained. Maybe I'm biased due to my brother, but I also enjoy this name; it's very melodic and classy. Another thing to note, I also much prefer Nicholas to Nikolas, Nicolas, and Nikolai. As for the nicknames (funny thing: Nick calls his full first name his "Nicholas name"), sure they're avoidable; you may have to correct many, but it's not the world's ending.
