I have a brother with this name; he has always gone by Nick. He seems to like his name fine, and has never complained. Maybe I'm biased due to my brother, but I also enjoy this name; it's very melodic and classy. Another thing to note, I also much prefer Nicholas to Nikolas, Nicolas, and Nikolai. As for the nicknames (funny thing: Nick calls his full first name his "Nicholas name"), sure they're avoidable; you may have to correct many, but it's not the world's ending.
