Tough one! Normally I would say Eleanor, because it used to be unusual. But Mary is the fresher choice these days I think. Little Eleanors are popping up right and left and it's getting more popular by the day!

Mary is actually quite a bright name. It's a pretty silvery periwinkle colour to me. "May" as a nickname is quite cute, much nicer than Ellie. I do prefer Marie, but Mary could be beautiful, especially if it's put with a fun middle name.

Eleanor. Mary is too popular.

Eleanor just because it feels less overused.

I'm so bored of meeting Ellies. They're everywhere! I definitely find Eleanor / Ellie more dull than Mary.

Eleanor - love the sound. It seems more interesting. Plus, I like nn Elle or Ella (that's how Eleanor is gonna be nicknamed in my area).

I'm choosing Eleanor, because it's such a classic name, and less popular of the two.

I choose Mary. The reason is that Mary gives the impression of being friendlier and more approachable than Eleanor.

I love both, but Mary is definitely my favourite. It’s one of my favourite names in general. A sweet, beautiful, timeless classic which people will call “common and boring” - but now, for a baby, it will not be common and boring; there are no little kids called Mary. It will be unique, formal and stunning, standing out among the Olivias, Poppys and Jaxtyns.

Eleanor by a mile, it's elegant and interesting. Mary is just so boring, like a placeholder.

Once upon a time I would have said Eleanor, but as the years have gone by I realized I didn't like this name as much as I originally thought. The appeal was just because it was longer and looked fancier than the other "plain" old-timey names. On it's own, though, without any comparisons? It becomes quite bland to me.

I've grown a newfound appreciation for Mary these past few years. It's short, but it has substance. Sounds crystal clear like a bell. I can now see why it had its staying power.

I love them both. On both sides of my family, there's a Nellie. Just Nellie. Which I wouldn't use, but Eleanor could honour both of those long-ago ladies. And I did use Mary as a mn for my first daughter, rather than either Bertha or Maria (her grandmother's names). I'd be happy with either Eleanor Mary or Mary Eleanor!

Mary. It's warmer, more welcoming, and less unexpected these days. I also really like the idea of a Mary "Polly" (though Eleanor "Nell" appeals to me too).
