What do you think of Viola? And how do you pronounce it?

I know two Violas - one who is nearly 100 and one who is 5. Both are vee-oh-la.I like it quite a bit.

I like it. I say vee-O-la. It reminds me of the instrument and the flower pretty equally. If you say VY-o-la or vy-O-la, it reminds me more of the Shakespeare character. But on a real person, I think the "vy" versions sound pretentious.

It’s a musical instrument (often joked about among other string players). Vee-OH-la is probably close to how I say it.

I love Viola (vie-OH-la), it's both sassy and classy (a little seductive too). I got into it after watching the movie "She's the Man" xD.

I love it, but only as Vee-OH-luh. It's so pretty and reminds me of purple.

I don't like Violet or the way it shortens to Vi; same problem with Viola. I pronounce it like the musical instrument - vieOHla. As for Twelfth Night, I find that vieOHla fits comfortably into an iambic pentameter line, and VIEohla doesn't. Same rhythm as Maria (maRIEa), come to think of it.

I'm writing an essay on Twelfth Night (and Antony and Cleopatra) as we speak! I used to think it was vee-O-la and I liked it. Then I watched the play in English for the first time, having only read it before, found out it was VIE-ə-la, and disliked it. Then I watched the play like, 5 more times, and it grew on me, as I adore Viola as a character. Still prefer vee-O-la!
