I first heard of McKay (mə-kay) in a book and although the character wasn't rememberable the name stuck. It's been on my list since.
I knew someone with this as their surname, pronounced as Mc Kai. I like it as a surname, but not so much as a first
Apparently something like 80% of Americans with the first name McKay were born in Utah (I saw it on a list of "Utah names" recently, so I think of that - McKay and McKade were common for boys while McKell, McCall, McKaylee were common for girls, especially in the 90s). Also it sounds a bit innocent and cheerful to me in a "can-do" sort of way.

The only McKay I know is an ex-Mormon from Utah!
I don't know any IRL but the first one I thought of was a youtuber who makes ex-Mormon / ex-cult videos.
That's interesting!
Yeah...the BtN submitted section says that it is probably used by Mormons because of David O. McKay, but now that I think about it, except for McKade, those are all very similar to Michael and Michaela, so I suspect Mormons liked those but wanted something more unique seeming.

I like it!
I love the nickname Mik and while it I get it is a surname I happen to be a fan of surnames as first names

Last name. There are a lot of last names that are being used as first names (like McKinley which gives me the same vibe) now though so it wouldn’t surprise me to meet a boy with this name.
Surname to me
And to me; and therefore certainly masculine as a given name.
