Re: Ashley

I knew a Chinese woman whose English teacher in the late 1970s in Taiwan had given her the name 'Susannah', which she didn't like at all. Someone else suggested Ashley and she liked it much better. I've also known a boy Ashley, but I automatically guess it's a girl name. I don't like it much; Ash is a bleak and dreary nn, so I try hard to think of ash trees instead. I gave Chinese Ashley the trees-in-a-meadow etymology, which made her happy. She didn't like the product-of-combustion meaning of Ash at all.
