Juli or July?
I watched a German movie last night and one of the main character's names was Juli, like the month (in German; pronouced YOO-lee). WDYT of it? I really really like it now, and it's also got me thinking of the name July. Which do you prefer? I think I prefer Juli, but I'm not sure.Maya Juli? Juli Maya?tia!PS. The movie was called Im Juli (In July)

I like that film a lot! :-)But you can be sure, that in German, Juli is only a nickname for Julia (YOO-lee-a). (Same holds for writer Juli Zeh - she's also a Julia originally.)
In English, I think I'd prefer Julie over July.*****

Read the comments for Juli: it's also the name for the month of July. ny

Yes, coincidentally so :-)I meant to say, in Germany (where I live) Juli is a nickname for Julia - you can't name a person after a month here.In the U.S. of course, it's no problem to name a child after the German word for a month :-)*****

As far as Jul- names go, my favourite is Julanne. I personally like Juli when it's soundalike to Julie, as a nickname for other Jul- names.I think that if you spelled it Yuli, it would be more viable in the US. A lot of people would think to say "juh" for Juli. However, if you don't like the way the Y looks (I do, personally--reminds me of Yolei :D), that throws a wrench in that plan.July has never really appealed to me, I'm afraid. I don't know why--I like word names a lot--but I just don't find it attractive in any way.Array

In the 80's, I was told by a Russian woman that Julia (YOOL-ia) was a very popular name over there. I thought it was a very beautiful pronuncation, but that it would never work here in the U.S. I have the same reaction to Juli. For what it's worth, my favorite incantation of the name is French Julie (ZHOO-lee).Juli Maya flows better than Maya Juli.

Maya Juli? Juli Maya? - too many Y sounds and in my opinion Maya is too like the month name May to be paired with a name that means July

LOL, I didn't even make that May connection! That went right over my head. Okay, I see that. You're right. :)

I wouldn't use it because I don't like word (ie month) names. That being said, I prefer the German prn better, so I think Juli is better, but I think it would probably be seen as a creative spelling of July to most Americans (where I am) and get misprn anyway.I don't like it with Maya because it sort of runs together with the Y sounds.

Juli Maya is a bit too monthy imo. I prfer Juli (as July is Juli in Dutch) with the Y pronunciation.

Okay . . .I didn't see before that it was too monthly because Maya has "may" in it. I feel stupid. I agree with you then; it is too monthly. :)
