Yes, it is totally old fashioned but I think it's honestly kind of cool. For some reason it makes me think of one of those dogs with really long ears and armchairs. It will definitely make a comeback so you would be ahead of everyone if you used it.

No, not hillbilly in the slightest. My associationes: those dogs (they are hunting dogs, black brown and white and have really long ears), armchairs, cigars, candles, British countryside, cricket, books.

I love Walter and think it works super well for a little kid. Walt is my favorite nickname for it. Way cuter than Wally imo.

All I can think of is old men, breaking bad, and something you’d name a stuffed animal as a joke.

I don't like Walter - to me it is very old mannish, and sort of stilted, stuttering, square.
I don't really like Walt either. Reminds of Disney.

I actually know a two-year-old named Walter. I thought and still think it's hard to genuinely imagine a young kid in 2022 named Walter. The name, I know, was given in honor, of someone, but I personally think it would have been more fitting as a middle name.

I don't associate the "rural hillbilly" image with the name. I have issues with that stereotype, first of all, but also it's a name common enough that while undoubtedly there are people named Walter who fit that image, there's also military men, Hollywood legends, even a vice president of the United States who share that name as well.

I have an uncle Walter too and he is definitely an old man who is really rural and hillbilly. You completely described him, so I definitely have that association.

Ever since I learned about Walter Mercado, I love the name Walter. It puts a much more colourful spin on it.

I have a great uncle Walter, we call him "Uncle Wally". I always thought Wally was a cute name. But maybe I was biased because he was such a nice, gentle guy.

Walter is rather retro-cool, not a big fan of Walt, though, always want to follow it with 'Disney'

It's very stiff and buttoned-up, or buttoned-down, whichever. Walt sounds more old-mannish than Walter, like someone's slightly crotchety grandfather. Wally sounds like a dimwit.
I would not use Walter with a last name similar to Parker. It just sounds too Foghorn Leghorn.

I like Walter, but not Walt. DH's nickname at school was Wally - it didn't have the connotations of unworldly wimpishness that it's collected; there are still some people who call him by it. We don't have rural hillbillies where I live, but they don't sound encouraging: perhaps better as a mn?

Just go with Walt.

I hate to say anything bad about it becuase it's an honoring name for you, but it IS an old man name, to me. And it isn't endearing the way other old man names are, it's just...musty and dorky and not cute. I'm not a fan.

I think Walter is timelessly handsome, and Walt is adorable. Walter & Oliver would be a charming set.
