Östen Gustaf*Context:Most of these names belonged to the members of the Finnish-Swedish minority which explains the usage of more Scandinavian, Germanic and Indo-European names in general. Finnish was made the official language with Swedish in 1858 and during the latter half of the century people started to (re)use more "pure" Finnish names inspired by the national-romantic movement. The usage of native, traditional Finnish names was lost during the Christianization in the Middle Ages: so, the most popular names in Finland were and even still are Biblical and saint names, such as Maria, Helena, Sofia, Johannes and Mikael. These were the forms that were used in the official documents, but people made up and used more Finnish sounding variants and diminutives of them, for example Maija, Leena, Sohvi, Juhani and Mikko. Nowadays these forms are used independently and have lost their nickname status.~*~*~*~kuin metsäorvokki laaksossa
