I've never liked Abigail, and I can't understand its rise in popularity. I far prefer Gail. Avigail looks as if it should have four syllables:
av-i-ga-il rather than three. Just as Devorah seems better when pronounced de VOR a, unlike DEB uh ra. (I don't know Hebrew, so this could well be my own invention.)

You're right actually, we do pronounce Avigail like you said. Also, I think it became popular do to it being a not-overly-religious biblical name. good biblical names for women are pretty rare anyway.

Thanks, Ohad. And, yes, it is a biblical name without too much religious baggage; like Anne, Elizabeth, Mary, Ruth and Sarah, and probably also Deborah and Rachel. Maybe Jemima and Rebecca?
