Many people assume this is a "hippy" name invented in the 1960s, but it's a lot older than that. There was an extremely popular novel written by Mary Jane Holmes in 1854 titled "Tempest and Sunshine" which is the story of two sisters who are nicknamed Tempest and Sunshine because of their contrasting dispositions. The book mentions their birth names are Julia and Fanny, but they are mostly referred to by their nicknames in the book. So both Tempest and Sunshine are found for a few actual girls in the 19th century, derived from that novel.
I didn't think it sounded like a hippie name. I think people say things like that because they hate hippies.
I kind of like it in an abstract way (I like Sola, Solaris, etc) but also it seems vaguely creepy, like Halcyon. Right now this song is the 1st thing it brings to mind: https://youtu.be/VfPhxPvCVx8
Sunny would seem more familiar to me and less psychedelic.
I've never met a Sunshine.

Halcyon seems creepy to you? Interesting. To me, it sounds like the name of a yoga retreat. But I guess that could be creepy.
I do like it, but also it's a drug.
Don't like it at all
Its a nice name. It seems unisex to me. The nickname can be Sonny or Sunny.
It does sound awfully corny, but I just love nature names. I prefer this to Evening, Night, Morning, Moon or Dawn. *shrug* To each their own.
Its a surname too. It would work as a middle name. Abigail Sunshine, or Jacob Sunshine...it does sound really surnamey though.

I think it's the sweetest nickname!
