I think it's fine IRL, or at least not worse than a name like Honor or Hattie. It mostly sounds old-fashioned and kind of fluttery but has some gumption.

I think when it's just a nickname, just for Frances or Stephanie, it's not as bad so long as the nickname is only used among family members. But considering it's a slang word for bottom it doesn't feel entirely usable for a first name legally.

I've met a couple of Fanny's, and I went to school with one. It's a legit name where I'm living. I think people are more aware of it's meaning in US/UK now though, and it's not as popular these days. I've never really liked the name, and especially not when I heard of it's US/UK meaning. It's a bit like Alfons for me - both cute but a bit childish, and with not so cute meanings in other languages.

I've known a couple Fannys. It's, uh, not a bad name, association aside.

In the US, fanny is a slang term for buttocks. It isn't rude in any way, it's the kind of thing your grandmother might say. "I fell right on my fanny in the middle of the store!" "Or maybe "You'll get your fanny warmed up good if you keep on sassing me back!"
