Jade (m)
I got to thinking lately that Jade would make a good boys name. I love it for a girl, and have for a long time, but think it’d work equally well on a boy. Of course, it’s already listed as feminine & masculine, but obviously it’s dominantly used on girls.I was playing with Jadeite (like from Sailor Moon) for a while, and decided that really I just liked Jade.Similarly, I have a new coworker named Jaden, and every time I see, hear, or say his name I can’t help to think that Jade is so nice and smooth, and the -den part is just grating. Here are some combos if you’re interested:Jade Alister
Jade Elliott
Jade Ezra
Jade Felix
Jade Ishmael
Jade Kieran
Jade Moses
Jade Oberon
Jade Oliver
Jade SolomonNow, I really like Jade Shelby, but know that sounds particularly feminine. So how about...Jade Felix Shelby
Jade Shelby Oberon
Jade Shelby Oliver
Jade Shelby Solomon

Please rate my lists. All of them are ratable except for the Main list and the Surname list. :)New names! PNL updated 5/29.https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/174843/136906

It doesn't work for me on a guy. It just feels super feminine to me, along the lines of Ruby.

I don't like it for a boy

I actually prefer the name Jade as boys name + there’s the (male) country singer Jade Eagleson. I LOVE the combo Jade Kieran! I think if you are using Shelby as well I’d use a very strong second middle name (think Alexander, Gabriel, Gideon etc). Oliver in particular still sounds very soft and feminine.

I thought Oliver would give it some “classic” appeal! What about Jade Solomon Shelby? Or do you mean something more commonplace strong, like Alexander or Michael?

Maybe it’s because of the popularity of Jaden, I can picture Jade on boy pretty easily. However, I think it’s better as a middle name.

I was just thinking about flower and gem names on boys, great minds think alike! Jade on a boy has a lot of retro appeal, like Cleo or Alva on a boy, like someone born in 1895. I love the grandeur of Jade Oberon.I think Jade Shelby would sound great with a more traditional male name in between it. So Jade Oliver Shelby, Jade Solomon Shelby, Jade Alister Shelby, etc. I'm going to play with boy-Jade too:Jade Marshall (Jade Shelby Marshall really works for me)
Jade Frederick
Jade Malcolm
Jade Samuel
Jade Howard Lawrence
Jade Benjamin Lucas
Jade Clifford
Jade Julian Edward
Jade Cameron
Jade MichaelYeah, I'm into it!

Yay, I’m glad I’m not the only one. :)I totally catch the retro vibe you’re talking about, though I can even see a Jade / Alva / Cleo (m) as recent as the 70s in my mind, oddly.I was playing with both Jade (name) Shelby and Jade Shelby (name) and thought they both sounded alright, so I do agree the combos sound nice that way as well!Jade Shelby Marshall is really nice. Marshall’s also a name on my list. :)What other gemstone / floral names have you been thinking about for boys? You piqued my interest!

I actually had a conversation like this with someone, if they HAD to pick flowery names for their son, what would they pick? And they said Iris and Aster. I came up with Clover (an idea I still love), Fern, Poppy, Lys, and Jonquil. I also liked Aspen, which is apparently just for girls? I had no idea. For gems, there are more options:
Opal "Opie" has heavy retro vibes to me
Topaz
Emerald (that "rald" makes me think of Gerald, Reginald)
Garnet
Chalcedony "Ced"
Cinnabar
Coral - I love this for a girl, but boy-Coral has more of that 1930's energy, just like Opal, Garnet, and Fern.
Diamond - this one actually has some historical precedence
Feldspar (love this one. Also reminds me of a flower name, Larkspur/Delphinium!)
Haüyne
Turquoise

Emerald, Garnet & Diamond are cool. I vaguely remember a discussion over Opal “Opie.” Coral is nice as well, but reminds me of Andrew Lincoln’s character in The Walking Dead yelling for Carl.Iris would work nicely, I love love love Iris for a girl. Aster and Aspen also work very easily. Turquoise is interesting.I don’t think I’ve ever seen Haüyne or Chalcedony. Thanks for sharing. :)
