If my family had followed their own naming traditions with me, this would have been my middle name, because it is my grandmother's name. For years I thought it was a pretty awful name, but just today I suddenly see that it has some hipster appeal. I think that post on Francine sparked something. It could be cool, paired the right way. "Shirl" as a short form is actually kind of 1930's neat. Remarkably there were still Shirleys being born right up until 2008!
