I have no clue how to pronounce Russian, but it kinda sounds like A fantasy.

It's so fun! I don't think it's suited for a real, ordinary person, though. However, I would name a very over-the-top character this any second. This name has such flair, such pizzazz!

It's outstanding and has a beautiful, elegant sweet sound. It has something intellectual in it. I generally crazily love masculine Russian names derived from Greek.

"A fantasy" is what I see.

It's considered too old-fashioned and unsophisticated in Russia. And, if I'm not mistaken, NN Afonya could be used to describe a fool, easily deceived uncunning (ignorant) person.

Thank you! I knew it was old-fashioned but I did not know about its unsophisticated connotation. I have heard of it with Afonya but because of the movie!!

You're welcome.
I've asked 50-something, who lives in Russia. He's a huge fan of Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet, the poet, and has nothing against that name. But even younger people (his daughter, a student) consider this name dated and unsophisticated, especially its NN. And you can't get away without NN :). They almost always use NN in Russia. You won't be called Afanasy, most of the time it's just Afonya.
And here is that movie, yeah. Boomers still remember it, I guess.
But of course tastes differ.
