Barney
Do you like it? Is it better as a nickname for Barnaby?Barney has been rising quite a lot in the UK.

Reminds of a certain Purple Dinosaur that Americans watched.

Don't like it, first thing I thought was the Flintstones

There was a Barney in one of the baby groups I took my son to. I don’t like it - prefer Barnabas.

I think it's cute, but I would only consider it as a nickname for Barnabas / Barnaby.

It's a no from me, dawg.I do kinda like Barnbaby by itself, but not enough to use it. Barney is terrible, even as a nickname.

Oops Barnaby, sorry lol

Don't apologize!I can't stop laughing at "Barnbaby"!

agreed! It's only appropriate, anyway, considering Jesus was born in a stable/barn... so Lapin just made an unwitting reference to Christ there! lol

Doesn't it also mean fight or argument in the UK?In the US, it's almost a joke name, very dated and heavily associated with Barney Miller and Barney Fife and of course, the world's most irritating purple dinosaur.
You never see it anymore except sometimes on dogs.

Yes, Barney does = fight in British English, but in lower case: barney.

Really? Never heard of that but it's possible. Barney is quite common in the UK (and rising quickly). But Barnaby appeals to me so maybe that works better.

Barney StinsonThe first thing I thought of was Neil Patrick Harris' character Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother. While the show has a huge fan base, I'm not sure that's a character you want to name your kid after. The nest thing I thought of was the big purple dinosaur.

I actually really hate "How I met your Mother", I think it's one of the worst and most boring shows of all time. So no, definitely wouldn't want that association :/ I also dislike the dinosaur, he was creepy. And I normally love dinosaurs so that says a lot...

Barney the DinosaurThat’s immediately what I think of.Good childhood memories, but no thanks.

I love it! I don't even think of the dino anymore, cuz I never really watched that show. We loved the Andy Griffith Show, so I just think of the greatest man of all time, Barney Fife. I think it works for Barnaby, also Barnabas, Barnard, Bernard, Bernadette :)

Personally, all I can think of is the purple dinosaur. It doesn't help that my second association is the drunkard from The Simpsons or that my third association is the womanizing creep from How I Met Your Mother. While Barney is not a bad name, I would opt for Barnaby because it has less baggage.
