Horatio
I noticed a couple of people had Horatio in their October top tens, and it's been on my mind lately because I've been watching the Horatio Hornblower films, so what do you guys think of it?
Personally, I think I really like it but feel it's just too heavy to give to an actual kid - I'd love to hear any combinations with it as FN or MN that might manage to lighten it up a little bit though!
"Do you not find it happens very often, that you are as gay as Garrick at dinner and then by supper-time you wonder why God made the world?"

For some reason Horatio's always come off as boyish and adventurous, even though I first heard it on an audiobook about Horatio Nelson. It's one of my favourite names. The feel and personality it gives me is very much the type of name I love; bright, fun, and energetic. I think some of today's trendier sounding choices work well with Horatio, or some more vintage/classic choices.

I hear 'hooray' and 'ratio' in it, so it's basically cheerful and mathmatical to me? Also a bit stuffy/literary/antique/round.
I like that Ray can be a NN for it, and I like the meaning.
Don't know if these lighten it up, but these are names I've liked it with:
Horatio Isaac
Horatio Dara
Horatio Amzi
The first one that came to mind other than those was Horatio Zev.

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Horatio is tied with Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in my mind. As such, Horatio conjures up the image of a well meaning, loyal friend who isn't particularly helpful and bumbles opportunities when they knock.
