I like it on its own. I don't particularly like the names that it could be feasibly used as a nickname for, either, and I wouldn't want to use one just for the sake of accommodating a nickname. My cousin and her husband have a baby Angus Leo and I like it; it doesn't seem too nicknamey in the middle name place, so I wouldn't think it would for a first name, either.
