I like it. I wouldn't use it due to the campy namesake, but I would love to meet one.

I like it, it's a popular name here and doesn't sound gothic at all to me.

First thought: “Elvira - Mistress of the Dark”. It may be why it sounds like vampires to so many of you.It definitely has a dark, gothic, Victorian feel to it. A bit like Lenore can’t really escape the Poe/Raven association. I used to find it too frilly, pink and princessy but it’s growing on me.

It sounds very dowdy and dated to me.

I agree, it sounds like the name of a vaguely malicious vampire wearing an extravagant red dress who invites you for a sumptuous dinner on the opposite sides of a very long table, but who doesn't touch the meal and then implores you to stay the night only to murder you viciously.

I love the character in Blithe Spirit! Though as a name, I prefer Ruth. Not sure about Goth: to me, influenced by Noel Coward because I've never met one, Elvira seems, not quite upper-class but certainly Old Money.

I don't dislike it. I wouldn't look twice at meeting a female of any age named Elvira. But I'd shorten it to Vera.

I adore the name but my aunt has named EVERY cat she has ever owned Elvyra and ruined my love for the name.
I mean picture a larger fluffy orange/white/yellow cat named Elvyra and tell me it doesn't make your head hurt...

It’s interesting. I personally wouldn’t use it. I agree that it gives off a gothic/mysterious and maybe even villainous vibe.
