Billy
What do you think of the name Billy for a boy?I dislike the name William and other variations, but I don’t like using a nickname as full name either. Would you use a nickname as full name?Or could Billy work as nickname for e.g. Benjamin Averill (taking the first letter of the first name and the last letters of the middle name.).

Billy is a common nn for the full name Vasilios/Vasilis... I don't mind it as a full name, though :)

I love the name Billy, always have for some reason. Using a nickname as a full name doesn’t bother me at all for the most part. Most can stand on their own in my opinion. I think if you like a name, then use it. I don’t like the idea of a nickname for a fn mn combo, unless it’s a nn like JP or CJ or something like that.

dont like it as a full name, what about Liam. Not sure Billy would work for Benjamin Averill, but nn can come from anywhere and not related to the name at all

Like William, love Will, hate Billy. (I also hate Willie FWIW).Bill was the ubiquitous nickname for William for those Williams born in my generation. Every William was a Bill and most of them had been called Billy as a child. (I personally didn't know anyone who didn't switch from Billy to Bill upon reaching puberty, though I'm sure there were some.) Maybe that's why I can't stand it. My son's name is William nn Will. My sisters knew that my husband and I planned on naming a son, if we had one, William, and they told me that if I called him Billy they wouldn't be able to stand it.As far as Billy working as nickname for Benjamin, I think people forget what "nickname" really means. I know it isn't used this way on the board, and I go along with that, but technically a nickname is a name used verbally which has no relation at all to the true name on the birth certificate. As in my father, named Joseph but called Bud. Or my SO, named Kenneth but called Buster. My stepbrother, named Harry but called Hutch. What we call nicknames are really diminutives. So you can use any nickname you want! It doesn't have to "work".No, I would never put a nickname or pet form or diminutive on a birth certificate.

I prefer Bill to Billy, and Will to either. But I would never use a nn as a full name; I believe in providing more possibilities rather than fewer. That said, I like William. And turning Benjamin Averill into Billy doesn't convince me at all.
