Frederick vs. Alfred
What is your preference? Do you like/dislike both equally? What names would you pair with each (whether in the first or middle name position)?Personally I like Frederick a lot at the moment. Zachariah Frederick and Ezekiel Frederick have particularly delightful appeal to me (though I'd be more likely to use Ezekiel, which I adore).I like Alfred somewhat (Alfred Samuel), but prefer Wilfred to Alfred. One of my favorite male names, Cecil, goes well with Alfred, Frederick, and Wilfred. Which do you think complements Cecil the most?

I’m sooo happy to see the name Cecil, I thought I was the exception to loving this name! Alfred Cecil sounds perfect (and I might “steal” it from you). I think Frederick is most “dull” of the three. Somehow I picture him as a surly German..
Alfred makes me think of the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson
Frederick makes me think of Fred Weasley
Wilfred “Wilf” reminds me of character in a book that I can’t remember the title of. All good associations in my opinion.

I like both and find them both warm, friendly, respectable names. For me, Frederick also feels especially strong and has more presence. I suppose I could say that, on paper, I’m fond of Alfred but quietly lust after Frederick. One of the combos I have is Frederick Eli; I’m enjoying that one today. Your Alfred Samuel is quite handsome.I prefer Alfred to Wilfred. I respect Cecil, but am not particularly drawn to it. Of your choices, I prefer Cecil Frederick. Guessing you use the long, “ee”, pronunciation; I tend toward the short “e” version.Playing a bit...Alfred Aubrey
Alfred Benjamin
Alfred Campbell
Alfred Esmond

Alfred Hugo
Alfred Irwin

I'm really enjoying Frederick at the moment.

I'll admit a partiality favor toward Frederick due to family heritage - but Wilfred also immediately offers numerous short-name / nickname possibilities.

I like Frederick more. As Al-names go, I think Albert and Alden are much more appealing than Alfred. But Alfred's not awful... mostly it's pwecious "Alfie" that puts me off it. Alfred : Alfie :: Josephine : Fifi.Cecil Frederick.

I'd choose Cecil Frederick (Cecil is great). I'm not massively keen on either name. Combos I'd suggest are:Adrian Frederick
Anatole Frederick
Joel Frederick
Jonah FrederickFrederick Arthur
Frederick Asa
Frederick Cyril
Frederick VincentBenedict Alfred
Isidore Alfred
Valentine Alfred
Xavier AlfredAlfred Isaiah
Alfred Nathaniel
Alfred Sebastian
Alfred Zachary

I like both Frederick and Alfred. They are both traditional English boy names, but I have different associations with them.Frederick seems more extroverted and makes me think of leaders like Frederick the Great and fun loving rogues like Fred Weasley. Alfred is more introspective and a wise counselor like Batman's right-hand Alfred Pennyworth.I am not as fond of Cecil. It sounds like the product of a British boarding school that becomes a lifelong politician. Something contrasting would probably compliment it best.

Frederick! Especially as a mn. I can picture it on a little boy, middle aged man, and old man equally, whereas I can only picture Alfred and Wilfred on an old man.

Frederick pleases me more, partly I think because it's a family name and Alfred isn't, but mostly because it's more versatile. Fred, Freddy, Derick, Eric ... however, come to think of it, I had a distant uncle who was John Wilfred and always went by Wilfred: he was born in the 1890s so I never knew him, but it doesn't make me enjoy Wilfred at all.My father was, probably, one of the last of the Cecils! I'd pair Frederick with Cecil: the others are rather too vintage.
