I'd think that little Walter got lucky, but not very lucky. And I'd imagine that all three names were honouring.
I dislike the sound of Eugene and its closeness to eugenics, and just about everything about Clarence, though I love Clare for a girl. Walter is fine, and I'd rather live with a Walter or a Wally (!) than a Eugene or a Clarence.
