It might have been used on occasion since then, but that doesn't mean it got a lot of use, or that it got use in America.
It's kind of like Jessica; it was used at least since Shakespeare's time but very rarely got use in the US till the mid-20th century, so while you wouldn't technically be wrong to use it for one of your characters, it would detract from the believability of your character/story.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!
