Opinions of Phoebe? (+ another question)
Hi Everyone! Was curious to know what you thought of the name Phoebe. To me, the spoken sound of it is so likable but I'm not a fan of that particular spelling (which is the only way I've personally seen it). In the database, there are legitimate variations of it as Phebe (biblical) and Febe (Spanish and Italian). What are your opinions on all 3 spellings? Do they have different personalities? Which is your favorite? + For a little girl of mediterranean/middle eastern background living in the United States, which spelling would you choose?

I like the sound and the history, but maybe because of the 90s TV influences, I picture a Phoebe to be a bit of a... twit. The one on Friends was ditzy, and the one on Charmed was thoughtless and selfish. Both very nice, but still. I have no idea how much those pop culture references have skewed my vision, and the next generation won't have those.Phoebe is the only spelling I like. The others may be legitimate in other cultures, but in North America they're just going to look like you were trying to dumb the spelling down.

I would choose Phoebe for anyone living anywhere. It's bright and happy and, above all, authentic.I know of a teenage Phoebe Lyra - her parents loved the Philip Pullman books. Usually I'm not a Lyra fan, but with Phoebe it improves greatly!

I like Phebe best. That's also the Shakespearean spelling iirc. Then again the bird is spelled Phoebe... Febe looks too short to me for some reason.
I've also seen Pheaby, but I'm not sure what I think of the "Phea" part (it looks like "pea" and that doesn't work well).

My impression is the exact opposite. The spelling is cool but the pronunciation seems whiny and “lightweight” to me. Can’t say I really like it that much. -Febe and Phebe have the same feel to me, just a different cultural background. I’d picture then the same way as I’d picture a Phoebe.-In the US I’d stick with Phoebe. It’s the most familiar spelling.

I love Phoebe, and it has been on our list, too. I really only like that spelling, but I'm a fan of Greek names. I also feel that since the 90s, the U.S. has gotten very used to Phoebe, so spelled that way she isn't likely to have any problems.

I like it but then I like lots of Greek feminine names. Phoebe's bright, simple, and ancient.Phebe vaguely looks to me like it could be a place...like Thebes...I don't think of a person when I see it, and I probably would've had to be corrected on pronunciation if I'd seen it first IRL...but it's not bad.Febe just reminds me of 'feeble' or 'February'.

I'd choose Phoebe if a child would be living in the US. I used to like it more than I do now. I got kind of tired of it. I associate it a bit with one of the sisters in Charmed.
Febe doesn't look like it has the same pronunciation as Phoebe. Phebe actually makes more sense to me than Phoebe and I think it looks better as well. But since everyone would probably assume "Phoebe", I think it'd be easier to be named that.
Other spellings I can think of which wold lead to that pronunciation: (though I'm personally not a fan of misspelling names on purpose)Phebie
Pheebie
Phoebi
Phoebie
Febie
FibiAnd closely related sound-wise are Fifi, Vivi, Hebe, Fabi

I'd choose Phoebe, because by a vast vast majority, that's the one most widely used. The other two spellings may be legitimate variations, but they don't look like it and Febe in particular looks like a snotty way of calling somebody stupid, like feeb.Which brings me to the name itself. I don't like it; the sound is babyish and silly, like a bird twittering. I think the Friends character Phoebe, who was a total airhead, was aptly named.

I appreciate it for its history and beautiful meaning. It also looks really nice. But I can see why it never really caught on in the US despite being featured on an extremely popular show (Friends). It just seems to weak and cutesy. Not the name itself, it has some weight due to its history, but the way it sounds. FEE-bee. I think in Britain it's common because they have a different style and many other names that are similarly cutesy sounding such as Evie and Alfie are very common there too. So I kind of disagree, I find the spoken sound of it not that likable but I love the way it looks. My favorite is definitely Phoebe. Second would be Phebe which was used by Shakespeare. Febe isn't pronounced like Phebe or Phoebe in Spanish/Italian so it feels weird to me to use it for the English pronunciation.Phoebe, regardless of the background.By the way, I have seen Phoebie. Not that I like it, but it exists :P
