Re: Jude for a girl

Why would you call a girl Jude? There are thousands of great names; why Jude? If Jude was your top favorite name of all time and you were 100% that you were never going to have a boy I might understand, but it reminds me of Anne Rice originally being named Howard because her father really wanted a son. She introduced herself as Anne on the first day of school.

"However, according to the authorized biography Prism of the Night, by Katherine Ramsland, Rice's father was the source of his daughter's birth name: "Thinking back to the days when his own name had been associated with girls, and perhaps in an effort to give it away, Howard named the little girl Howard Allen Frances O'Brien."[15] Rice became "Anne" on her first day of school, when a nun asked her what her name was. She told the nun "Anne," which she considered a pretty name. Her mother, who was with her, let it go without correcting her, knowing how self-conscious her daughter was of her real name. From that day on, everyone she knew addressed her as "Anne",[16][17] and her name was legally changed in 1947.[2] Rice was confirmed in the Catholic Church when she was twelve years old and took the full name Howard Allen Frances Alphonsus Liguori O'Brien, adding the names of a saint and of an aunt, who was a nun. "I was honored to have my aunt's name," she said, "but it was my burden and joy as a child to have strange names."[18]"
It is also worth pondering why Anne Rice's mother thought a woman would have an "advantage" in the world by having a man's name.

That's cool - Thanks for sharing
I never knew the birth name of Anne Rice to be Howard Allen. That's cool!

Can’t I say the same thing for whatever name you like? “Why would you call a girl ____? There are thousands of great names; why ____?” It’s a matter of personal taste, why put someone else’s down? It’s one thing to say you don’t like it, it’s another to bash me for my personal taste in names!

Of course, you can ask me why I like a name and what made me choose it! Why is a useful question and you should never be afraid to ask yourself and others about the thoughts/beliefs/motivations behind an action or preference. People have asked why I do or don’t like a name or trend on this site on multiple occasions, and they may or may not agree with my reasoning or taste.
I have asked people’s opinions on names before, and sometimes people do not like the same names I do, but I appreciate the honest feedback and the opportunity to hear opinions expressed that are different from my own. If I ever post a name you dislike, please let me know what you think and why you feel that way. Other people may feel the same way you do, and I post to find out how other people perceive names. I cannot promise to alter my views based on yours, but I am interested in name opinions.
Just because I question the use of Jude on a girl, I am not bashing all the other names you like, your preference in general, or you personally.

I appreciate the kind response. I guess I just see the “why this name when there’s so many beautiful names…” argument as useless and doesn’t really contribute in a helpful way, as it could be asked about any name. And the answers always the same; because I personally like it! I encourage everyone to leave their honest opinions— good or bad— on my posts, this particular question just irks me to be honest.
