British Royal Baby 2018 (Update)
The third child of Prince William and Duchess Kate is to be born this month. Older siblings are George Alexander Louis and Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Months ago, I did a couple of polls as well as a forum discussion as to what the baby would be named when it was born. It wasn’t until a couple of months ago that I did an updated version of the polls.

I cut down to 12 options; certain names like John, Anthony, Leopold, Cecilia, Maude, and Alberta were ditched because they were unlikely to be used. I finally put in Arthur as well as a couple more names for the boy’s poll. For the girl’s poll, I just picked out the ones that had at least a few votes. Just like previously, I put down reasons for the possible names, as seen below.
Boy/Prince:
James - There were some kings named James, notably James VI and I. Unlikely for a first name, since Will has a cousin named James.
Alfred - Alfred the Great. Was once my pick for a prince, but not anymore. However, I have hope that they’ll use it as one of the middle names.
Frederick - Frederick the Great, Frederick of Sweden, George III’s little brother Prince Frederick…Frederick means “peaceful ruler,” too.
Richard - Three kings were named Richard. This is now my guess for a boy.
Edmund - Two kings have been named Edmund.
Henry - Eight kings as well as Will’s brother Harry have been given this name.
Arthur - King Arthur. Seems like everyone wants this to be the first name for a new prince, but I feel it’s too cliché for royalty. It’s also one of Will’s middle names.
Michael - Kate’s father.
Philip - Prince Philip, who recently had hip surgery. It’s also one of Will’s middle names.
Stephen - Stephen of Blois, who ruled England from 1135 until his death in 1154. I can’t believe I forgot about this the first time! It would be nice to see this on a prince.
Albert - Prince Albert, Victoria’s husband. Albert was also the given name of Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI. This is becoming another popular guess besides Arthur.
Robert - Three Scottish kings have been named Robert, the most notable one being Robert the Bruce. Since they used Alexander for their son Prince George’s name (three Scottish kings have been named Alexander), there could be a possibility that they’ll sneak Robert into the name somehow.
Girl/Princess:
Victoria - Queen Victoria.
Margaret - Queen Elizabeth’s sister. This is now my guess for a princess.
Alice - Still one of the popular guesses. Prince Philip’s mother was named Alice.
Eleanor - Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Matilda - Empress Matilda. Used to be my guess for a girl, but it's now Margaret.
Sophia - Sophia of Hanover.
Mary - Two Queen Marys, as well as King George V’s wife. One of QE2’s middle names is Mary. This is another name that is becoming a popular guess.
Frances - Princess Diana’s middle name.
Caroline - Caroline of Ansbach, wife of George II. Kate’s mother’s name is Carole, so this would, in a way, honor her.
Jane - Jane Seymour (third wife of Henry VIII and mother of Edward VI) as well as Lady Jane Grey, the Nine-Day Queen. Will also has an aunt named Jane (Diana’s sister).
Alexandra - Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII and Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandmother.
Philippa - Kate’s sister Pippa’s real name is Philippa. A daughter of Henry IV was named Philippa; she became Queen of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. We also have Philippa of Hainault, wife of Edward III. On top of that, it’s the feminine version of Philip.
What do you think? Do you think Will and Kate will go for one of these names, or surprise us by picking something entirely different? What combos do you see happening? My guesses would be Richard Philip Michael for a boy and Margaret Alice Jane for a girl.

I'm looking at patterns and trying to predict based on what the used for Royal Babies #1 and #2
George Alexander Louis
- FN was granddad and great-great-granddad's middle names
- MN1 not used in the recent, immediate male family though Alexandra is great-grandma's middle name
- MN2 also dad's middle name, plus Louise is great-aunt's middle name
Charlotte Elizabeth Diana
- FN not used in immediate royal family but Charles is granddad's FN and uncle's MN
- MN1 lots of namesakes including mother and great-grandma
- MN2 no royal connotation but honours paternal grandma
So... All that said! My picks for Royal Baby #3 and why
Frederick Arthur Philip
- FN hasn't been used recently but was great-great granddad's middle name
- MN1 much more popular as dad's, granddad's and great-great granddad's middle name
- MN2 used by great-grandfather, granddad and dad.
Amelia Mary Carole
- FN has no royal association but hangs around the same popularity as Charlotte and George plus is regal on the continent.
- MN1 also great-grandma's middle name and strong Christian association
- MN2 direct honouring of a grandma, much like Charlotte's 2nd mn.

I think they will be allowed to be a bit more creative with their third child. It is very unlikely that this child will inherit the throne. I don't think they will be allowed to use a trendy name but they do have more choices now.
I hope for:
Richard - I think this is handsome as long as it is used in its full form.
Arthur - I really like this too, handsome.
I really don't think they will use:
Henry - it's Prince Harry's full name and I don't think they will use it again.
Michael - Prince Michael? I really don't see this happening at all.
James - weren't there bad associations with ancestors of the royal family by this name? It is possible that I am getting it confused with John.
Alfred - this is kind of goofy.
Stephen - super dated.
Not sure about:
Frederick - I like it but would they use the same name as a prominent member of another royal family?
Edmund - not bad but I would prefer Edward. Is Edward out of the question?
Albert - Prince Albert of Monaco is just too strong of an association.
Philip - there is a Prince Philip, isn't there?
Robert - feels a bit dated, less timeless than Richard.
I hope for:
Eleanor - I think it's really nice. But I doubt they will use it for some reason. Also I think it's feeling a bit tired in the UK, it was very common a few years back.
Matilda - I love it but not sure if this isn't too edgy for them.

I agree with that; that's why I went looking for all those names back when I did the previous polls.
Richard is still my pick for a boy. I am going to guess Michael will enter as one of the middle names. James has already been used (the only "bad" association I can think of would have to be the fact Princess Diana had a lover named James). Stephen hasn't been used in ages, so it could be a bit of fresh air for the royal family. Edward is out due to the current Prince Edward (Will's uncle).
Matilda was my former pick, as mentioned; I'm still hoping it'll be used. Philippa could be a middle name, should they consider it. I have no idea why Alexandra and Victoria would be "dated", especially seeing how Victoria is ranked in the 90s in the U.K. I feel like Victoria would've been better off being used on a first-born daughter. I had Cecilia on the previous polls (Queen Elizabeth II's maternal grandmother was named Cecilia).
If Will and Kate managed to honor Will's mother with their daughter's name, then I'm sure there'll be a chance that a name on Kate's side of the family will be used, regardless of sex.

I don't think they'll pick Richard since Richard III is quite hated.
Arthur's actually not that cliche for real-life royalty, although there were some real-life royal examples, like Queen Victoria's third son, the Duke of Connaught (who is great-grandfather to the King of Sweden and the Queen of Denmark through his older daughter Margaret).
Michael would be nice since it would integrate Kate's family. I think Caroline would work well too since Carole is very dated, or maybe not since Caroline is related to Charlotte.
I wouldn't be surprised if they picked something from Diana's family.
Victoria sounds like a likely choice for a girl. So does Alice.

I'm hoping that they select Mary Alice Victoria or Victoria Mary Rose for a princess. This is entirely selfish: I don't want Alice to bump too far up the name charts, as I think we are going to use on our baby girl. :) But I have a feeling they will use Alice.
For a boy, I vote Arthur or Henry. A lot of bets are on Albert, but Albert feels a little more offbeat than Charlotte and George.

Sadly, I think a boy would be Arthur. Sadly because I love the name Arthur, and fear that if I did wish to use it in the future it would share the same fate as George and Charlotte (popularity skyrocketing). Hopefully they'll also stay away from Jack, Edwin and Elliot... Also, I don't believe they would chose Richard, due to Richard III, the whole princes in the tower thing.
For girls I believe they'd chose Alice, it was high in the bets for Charlotte's name. I don't believe they would chose Philippa, it seems a bit weird to name a child after your sibling nowadays.
Middle names: Philip, Charles, Henry, Albert or Matthew
Middle names: Margaret, Jane, Frances, Eleanor or Matilda

What about Charles? Edit: forgot daughter's first name was Charlotte
My first name guesses, based on this data, are Frederick and Alice.
As for combos, I can play around:
Frederick Albert Henry
Frederick Henry Charles
Frederick Henry Stephen
&
Alice Eleanor Mary
Alice Victoria Mary
Alice Philippa Jane
And what about Charles? After all, that's Prince William's father's name.
EDIT: For some reason, I thought the little princess' name was Elizabeth. My bad.

What about big sister Charlotte? Wouldn't you think that would be overkill?
Too similar for a sibset! We name nerds will be up in arms!
Alice seems like a very popular choice, but Caroline goes well with Charlotte and would be honoring. Matilda and Victoria are both lovely as well.
Since George's middle name is Alexander, it is unlikely to be used. Philip or Alfred seem like good bets. I wonder if Michael will be one of the middle names in honor of the Duchess of Cambridge's Dad.
Caroline Victoria Matilda
Amelia Mary Caroline
Philip Arthur Michael
Alfred William James

If it's a boy, I'd love to see Arthur used. When George was born, I read somewhere that Kate's fave boy name was Alexander, however, that couldn't be used for a future monarch so I wouldn't be surprised if the couple use it as the fn for another ds. James, Henry, Edward (similar to Edmund), and Philip are currently in use by fairly close family members so I cannot see them using these as fns if this babe is a boy.
If it's a girl, I'd love to see Victoria used for the dd of a future monarch. That's definitely my fave of the bunch. Princess Margaret's ds has a dd named Margarita so I'm just not seeing it being used by the Cambridges. I also wouldn't be surprised if Alexandra was given to a girl since Kate likes Alexander so much. Eleanor really excites me as does Caroline. Alice is nice as well. There are some great names to choose from this list.
Will and Kate seem to be traditionalists to me so I can't picture them getting too creative with names. Supposedly, Kate loves the name Rose so it might show up as one of the mns if it's a girl.

I think it will be Shlomo or Yetta.
“Whatever, this kid will never be monarch. Let’s just use something we love. I’m thinking something in the category ‘Yiddish grandparent chic.’ You cool with that, William?”
LOL
L.O.L.
My top choices are Arthur or Alice.
I could also see Alfred, possibly Henry or Frederick for boys and Eleanor or Matilda for girls. Personally I'd like to see Eleanor or Matilda.
I don't see Margaret as likely for a first name. For one thing it's very dated in the UK and William and Kate seem like the sort of people who would choose popular names. I also don't see why they would honour Princess Margaret. I doubt William would have known her that well for one thing.
I could also see Helena, Sophia or Isabella for a girl. Not long to find out anyway.

I still think it will be Alice or Arthur. Frederick is also a possibility for a boy. I don’t think they would use Albert due to the “Prince Albert” piercing! Michael, Stephen, Richard and Robert are all a bit dated and they seem to like popular names. Margaret is probably still too associated with Thatcher for a lot of people in the UK.
One girls name not mentioned in the list that I think could be an option is Helena (the name of one of Queen Victoria’s daughters).
My guess for combos is Alice Philippa Mary or Arthur Philip Henry.

if I recall ...
The queen and Princess Margaret didn't get along, so maybe Margaret might not be a good choice for that reason as well?

I had Helena previously, but dropped it.
