Siren?
I saw this being used as a name for the main character in a cheesy B movie about mermaids, guess what she is? Thoughts on Siren as name? Oblivious if the movie hadn't been about mermaids the name would be more interesting instead of super obvious!
What other mermaid related names would be better?
"Your goal in life should be to make your past self envious of your current self"
"Be kind, please rewind" - an ancient proverb

Mermaids are one of those times when made up names are perfectly okay. It makes no sense for mermaids to use the names of our cultures when they're not from our cultures. Can you imagine if Tolkien had named his elves things like Jeff, Cathy, Debra, and Todd?
Anyway, some ocean-related names I like:
f:
Maristela
Meraud
Darya / Derya
Kaia
Sedna
Marisol
Mariana
Naia
Nia / Niamh
Asherah
Lorelei
m:
Caspian
Marin
Marius
u:
Meredith
Kai
Moana
Kaimana

Hi !!!!
One of my favourite names is Serena while the Italian for the mythological creature is 'sirena' (for both 'siren' and 'mermaid').
So it is too similar to be considered.
In the other side I would love Siren because of its wonderful sound that make me think of Serena.
It would be a circle.
Anyway I would prefer it spelled Syren / Syrena. I don't know why because I generslly dislike creative forms but this time I find the y very elegant in this name.
WDYT?

Syrena is the mermaid's name in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Siren does not make a good name. If you leave aside the deadly mermaid angle, there's the loud fire/police/ambulance alarm sound, which is what usually springs to mind first anyhow. Even for a mermaid name, it's as painfully obvious as a whack across the head with a two-by-four.
your last point just made me giggle
the one about being whacked with a two-by-four
