It does sound geeky to me, and it also sounds coarse/outdoorsy/old-fashioned...I get a similar vibe from Grover, though Oscar is more modern/common.

When I was a kid, I associated it with the Oscar Mayer Weiner song and Oscar the Grouch (who I quite liked, so it wasn't a negative association, necessarily). Now I associate it more with Oscar Wilde, Oscar Isaac, and kids I know of named Oscar.
