21 Old Fashioned Nicknames for Girls That Make Charming First Names
According to Cafe Mom, again.Bizzy (nn for Beatrice or Elizabeth)
Libby (nn for Elizabeth)
Sukie (nn for Susan or Susannah)
Tessie (nn for Theresa)
Birdie (nn for Beatrice, Elizabeth, Bridget, or Bertha)
Flossie (nn for Florence)
Tibby (nn for Tabitha)
Goldie (it doesn't say what this would actually be a nickname for. Maybe Golda?)
Dovie (nn for Deborah)
Polly (nn for Mary -- and that's my own contribution. Cafe Mom just says it's a variation of Molly, but it and Molly both started out as nicknames for Mary.)
Letty (nn for Letitia, Lettice, or Violetta)
Winnie (nn for Winifred, Winona, Edwina, Gwendolyn, or Rowena)
Essie (nn for Estelle, Estella, and Esther)
Billie (Cafe Mom doesn't say what this would be a nickname for, but I'd say Wilhelmina)
Dillie (nn for Delilah, Cordelia, Dahlia, Daffodil, or Odelia)
Georgie (nn for Georgia, Georgina, Georgiana, or Georgette)
Mellie (nn for Melody, Millicent, Carmela, or Melanie)
Hattie (nn for Harriet or Henrietta)
Effie (nn for Euphemia)
Trixie (nn for Beatrix, Beatrice, or Patricia)
Lottie (nn for Charlotte)Okay, so....which do you like? Which do you dislike? Which ones do you think actually cannot stand on their own? And, if you had to call your daughter one of these nicknames, along with one of the names that it's a nn for on her birth certificate, which would it be?

I like/can tolerate:Bizzy
Tessie - much prefer Tessa or even Tess though
Essie
Billie
Dillie
Georgie
Mellie
Trixie I dislike Effie, Hattie, Dovie & Birdie. I don't think those should be given to a child as nicknames, and definitely not as stand alone first names! If I had to use one for a daughter, today it would be Billie, nn for Sibyl (not Wilhelmina!).

The ones I like enough to use as first names:Georgie
Effie - although it is very nicknamey.Ones that are usable but not really my style:Libby
Polly
Winnie
Billie
Hattie
LottieOnes I like but would only use as a nickname:Sukie
Tessie
EssieOnes which are ridiculous:Bizzy
Birdie - I noticed three of them in the 2016 chart the other day.
Dovie - how is this a nickname for Deborah?!The others I don't really have much of an opinion on. Trixie is just really dated. Goldie is a dog's name but I wouldn't be surprised if someone had it as a nickname if it fitted with their surname or something like that.

Deborah = Devorah, perhaps?

Polly, Essie, Billie and Hattie are cute names (Essie was the name of a grand aunt of mine).

Hrm... the only ones that really work for me are Goldie (which I guess could also be a nn for Marigold), Polly, Billie and Effie, the others feel a bit childish as full names.I'd go for Effie, but cheat and use Fiammetta as a first name, I think it works.

Years ago, I knew a Birdie--as a "pet" for Gertrude; and no one ever caller her Gertrude. Interestingly - I am still toying with the idea of adding Elizabeth as an additional middle name, but I would never allow myself to be called Libby: and though I would not like Buffy either--Buffy still has a unique nature to it which I might more easily accept before Libby.

Billie can also be a short version of Belinda. Most of the list are toe-curlingly awful. And the steady flow of -y and -ie endings is cheapskate sentimental.Exceptions would be Polly (family nn for Mary which I'd use as a full name) and, as I say, Billie if short for Belinda, which I like but feel hesitant about for some reason.Worst of the worst: Bizzy, Birdie, Dovie (!) and Lottie.I knew a dog named Trixie once. That was OK.Why anyone would use Tessie when Tessa exists, I can't fathom. Ditto Georgie when there's Gina. And Effie sounds like polite swearing. You Effie idiot! That sort of thing.

I love almost all of these longer names, and I love almost all of the nicknames. AS NICKNAMES.

I personally think most of these would be pretty childish as stand-alone names, but especially Bizzy, Birdie, Flossie, and Dillie. As nicknames, I do really like Libby, Essie, Hattie (but not Harriet, so I think it could stand on its own and be ok), and Lottie. I would probably go with Elizabeth "Libby" if I had to use one of these :)

I love Libby and if I had a daughter right now she would be Willemina "Billie". Georgie and Hattie have both been on my list at times. Those 4, Winnie, and Lottie make okay first names, but all are better as nicknames. Tibby, Lettie, Effie, and Essie are borderline. Polly is scarcely a nickname anymore.

I like:Libby
Georgie
Mellie
LottieI'd probably go with Libby because it's the most full-namey. Second choice Mellie (but a distant second, due to the likely mistake for Millie, which I don't like). I like Mellie for Melanie or Mellisant. Most of the rest I hate.
Bizzy, Hattie, Effie, Flossie, especially can't stand on their own.
Tricksy ... I mean Trixie should be okay but, I can hardly hear the name at all past the "tricks" in it. Tricks. It's even more so than Feel-Licks.

I only like Libby, Hattie, Letty and Lottie.I would use Libby for Elizabeth, although it's not my favourite nn for it.

Lottie is the only one I like. I actually love Lottie. I would definitely pick Charlotte "Lottie", considering Charlotte is one of my favorite names and I find Lottie adorable.

I love and have on my list:
Trixie- This never gets much love. I was on a thread and the usual "stripper name", "it's kinda trashy", "dog name" comments, then: "I've never liked it since my friend's pet rabbit, Trixie, tried to eat her own babies". Seriously? Cannot get a break with this one. But I still love it, in full and as a nn for Beatrix.
LibbyI like/love:
Effie
Tessie
Letty- Used to be on my list, but replaced by Hettie.
Essie
Georgie
Billie- I like Bill too. Sybilla/Sibylla is another option. I don't like Flossie (dental floss), Mellie, or Dillie.I don't really like Goldie, but Marigold is an option there.A daughter would be Beatrix nn Trixie hands down. I also like Henrietta, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Violetta, and Georgiana. Marigold nn Goldie would've been a close second, but I'm not sure I like Goldie enough.

I don't think ANY of them can stand on their own. They're too fluffy for formal use.I'd happily name a daughter Beatrix and call her Trixie though.
