Thaddeus and James
I told my boyfriend that when we have a son one day, I really want to name him Thaddeus. I think the name just sounds cool and strong, plus I love the nickname Thad :) But he absolutely hates it! And not even for a good, just that it sounds dumb (¬_¬)So I asked him what boys name he liked and he said James. I have a conflicting feelings with James. I like the sound of the name but I hate the seriousness it gives off. It makes me wince inside. What do you guys think?

My ex-fiances name is Thaddeus and he's a Tad/Taddy. I def prefer his full name. Funnily enough his middle name is James! I'm not so fond of this name, to me its very bland and common. I do love Jamie, just for the little extra pizazz :)

Ugh, and he likes the nicknames Jim, Jaime, and Jem? Because if he doesn't, then he should steer clear of James as well. My friend named her son James and insisted he will only ever be called James, but what if he wants to go by Jaime in high school or his coworkers as an adult call him Jim and he doesn't mind? You can't control nicknames, unfortunately. Thaddeus is okay. I have nothing against it. I also don't mind Thad, but it does sort of have a Jeb or Sid or Jethro sort of vibe to it.

I'm guessing by "sort of vibe", you think it sounds a bit hillbilly-ish? If that's what you mean, I guess I kinda see that :P

I adore James, and I'm neutral regarding Thaddeus. It isn't a name I would use. They do seem to be very different styles.

I love Thaddeus but have no feelings about James because it's stale and inert from overuse.

That's exactly how I feel. There's some common names I don't mind like Olivia and Alexander. But I just can't stand James.

Thaddeus is ugly ugly ugly. It sounds like a body part, like your thalamus. Thad is gross too, it'th tho thad and lithpy. And Tad just sounds like an asshole of a boy, even more so than Todd.James is very nice, and it has plenty of nns to lighten it up. Jimmy is youthful and unpretentious but grows up reasonably well; Jim is a handsome, down-to-earth grownup. Jay is kind of sophisticated and smart. Jamie ... well, some people think it's cute, I think it's babyish.

Well personally I think of the average James, imagine he's pretty obnoxious to others. On the outside he may seem sophisticated but in the inside he's just a degenerate. Plus every James I knew fits this very description. However, this is just my subjective view. And if you hate Thaddeus because of how it sounds, what about Theodore? They're basically similar.

I want to like Theodore ...Because I really like the nn Ted, but I just can't wholeheartedly like Theodore. The pleasure of using the nn Ted is just not worth the prissy, slightly pompous Theodore.

Really? I don't find James serious at all, just a good, all-purpose name. There are so many namesakes it can evoke anything from 'James and the Giant Peach' to James Bond, James Joyce, James Brown, James Dean. All so different. Plus you could use Jim or Jimmy, if you like those. Apparently a lot of people don't, but I have a big soft spot for them.I like Thaddeus too though. I would use Tad instead of Thad, however. Thad sounds thick and clunky to me.

I don't really mind the fact it's common. Now that I think about it, all of the James I know in my life kinda ruin it for me. But I know if I actually do name my son James, I would definitely use either Jimmy or Jaime. And plus, I like the nickname Thad because it's clunky

In our case, Thad sounds just like Tad. It's just a way of keeping the spelling closer to the full name. Although I guess some people pronounce Thad the way it looks.

Aha, I like that. Do you pronounce Thaddeus with a distinct 'th-' sound? I suppose you could also go either way with the full name.

Yes, we do pronounce Thaddeus that way.

My grandson is named James Thaddeus! The plan was to call him by his middle name, and his paternal grandparents call him Thad.I love both James and Thaddeus, but James is a tad boring from overuse. At any rate, I wouldn't use a name that makes me wince inside. Thaddeus is beyond cool. There was Thaddeus Stevens, who was badass. I hope your boyfriend changes his mind.

That's a really cute combo :) And when the time comes, I'll probably just make him like Thaddeus haha. Maybe will even settle with Thaddeus James, even though my original desired combo is Thaddeus Jerome.
