Definitely a one-owner name. Pity, because it sounds good. And then there's the connotation of Insanely Optimistic, which isn't actually that fair to the actual character, but public opinion isn't going to change.

I like Polly very much as a stand-alone name, and Anna not at all. Pollyanne might work, like Sallyanne or Maryanne, but I'd rather have just Polly on its own.

I honestly hate it. It is too strongly associated with the live action Disney movie from the '60's for me to take seriously. Plus it's a term for someone who is hopeless optimistic.

I can't decide if I like it or hate it..

I think it's kinda corny as a name, since it's a term for someone who's excessively optimistic, plus the term is mostly used in a negative context. Other than that, it sounds kinda frilly.

I have read the book Pollyanna, and I enjoyed it. There's also an old anime series based on the book and its sequel. (Has anyone else here besides me read the book?)

I think its a sweet name. I wish I heard more of it, but it wouldn't really fit into our family name style.

My mother's name is Polly and as a joke, one of her relatives would call her "Pollyanna"
Up into recently, one of her sister-in-laws actually thought that was her actual name. Buhahaha!
If I wanted to, I could use this name for honoring, not just because of my mom but also because of my maternal grandmother named Anna. But I don't think I will. Pollyanna just sounds dated and cartoonish. A name best left in that 50's movie. Also, despite the name belonging to my mom, I much prefer other names over 'Polly' And no, not because of the "Polly pocket, Polly the parrot, Polly wanna cracker" associations. My mom received all of those, mainly from her 3 daughters. (:

Tbh I never even heard about Pollyanna having negative associations until I was like... 20. I've never heard anyone use it as a noun for a naive person but idk maybe I just grew up in an area where it wasn't common.
And I haven't read the book and I doubt most children who would tease would have read it either. I think Pollyanna is cutesy and immature. I kind of appreciate how simplistic and hmm down-to-earth it sounds, like Dorothy May or Mary Jane haha. NMS but I appreciate it.

Bad idea. It's not just a name associated with one specific character; the name is now a common noun that describes a person with the worst qualities of that character. Naivety and sickening cheerfulness.

If ever a name had a strong, bad association, this one does. In fact, it's even a term for a person who is sweet and optimistic to the point that it's annoying, and who seems to have no faults to the point that it's annoying..."She's a real Pollyanna".
