It tends to remind me of sports (and algae) more than the color because of teams like Alabama Crimson Tide and Harvard Crimson.
I guess it could work, considering names like Hudson and Scarlet work, but imo, it seems flat or exaggeratedly stylized, like a caricature (or mascot).
