Re: Backstreet Boy BA
in reply to a message by RDNZL
I meant a person who trained to be a chef.My brother is a Master Chef. He worked as a cook in his teens but wouldn't have called himself a chef because he lacked the experience, practice and skills. However, even if he is cooking burgers in the backyard now... he is still a chef. I think that trained singers (even if they are in a boy band) can be musicians. That is not to say that everyone who sings is a musician. In the same way that I can play the violin, but I am not a musician because I never took the time to learn the skill. Ah, it's all semantics and I was in an especially picky mood yesterday. I just took voice lessons in college and was shocked at the difficulty. I can sing... but I won't ever put in the time to become a singer. Bleh.

No biggie. I'm not being fair when I judge true musicians on whether or not they play instruments or write their own songs, especially since some of my favorite artists DON'T write their own songs and have amazing voices. I always referred to them as "singers", though, never "musicians". You're right, it's all semantics.
