Poppy and I said it's a grandfather's name in the US, there were those who said it's not so commonly used as such these days. But
Nana, now, there's no argument.
Nana is a
very common name for a grandmother, at least in the US. It's what her grandchildren called my mother. I can't see it at all as a name for that reason.
Even as a name for a grandmother, I never liked it. It's always made me think of a big fat woman in a white nurse's uniform. But it's what my mother wanted to be called...my niece took it upon herself to start calling my mother
Nana, because it was the grandmother name used in her father's family, and for some reason my mother preferred it to Grammy. Blech. But I went along with it as that was what she wanted.
