Laura seems softer and Julia seems smarter.

I love Julia and dislike Laura. But I dislike Laura because of a bad association. It's not a reflection on anything inherent in the name.

While I like both these names, they're starting to bore me to tears. They just feel so... unimaginative.

That said, they're tasteful classic names. I prefer Julia to Laura, mostly because Laura is slightly dated and I've known too many of them.

I do not get the same image from Laura and Julia.

I knew a few Julia's well, one was an awesome artist and the other two had almost the same personality as Hermione Granger, one of those two was sort of a friend and the other was a real b*tch. They both were the most studious and intelligent girls in our grade but the b*tchy one was not nice to me and both acted like they were above me to some degree the mean one especially. Julia has a real snooty, emotionally restrained, intelligent girl who speaks her mind vibe. She is ambitious and probably ran for class president and probably comes from a rich Catholic family.

Laura is a free spirited rule breaker who is emotionally unrestrain. Laura feels more connected to the earth. My best friend my whole life has been named Laura and the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder were my favorite through elementary school and middle school. My Laura loves to push boundaries just like Laura Ingalls did. My Laura is an artist. She does what she wants to deciding not to care what people will think. Almost all the Laura's I know do not seem like they come from rich families and I have met a lot of them.

I had another good friend named Lauren in elementary school and her personality was more similar to a Julia although les studious and more artistic. Lauren was a ballerina who was apart of the Pacific Northwest Ballet company's production of the Nutcracker at McCaw Hall for many years before she moved to Michigan in 4th or 5th grade. Since she as so young it was always small parts but still it was a big deal. One year she played one of the children, another a mouse, then a tin soldier, and finally she got to play little girl Clara.

I love Laura and would have happily used it, except it seemed a bit too Italian-renaissance with Beatrice. But it's one of the happiest names I know.

I find Julia boring and bland and self-obsessed, somehow.

I slightly prefer Laura but have always considered these two names (along with Maria) to be timeless in the sense that if a person had never met others with these names (and even sometimes if they had), they'd have very little idea how old they were just by hearing the names. I love it -- no assumptions, no judgments.

As for the similar qualities of the names themselves, they're both classic, elegant, and internationally known. They'd fit in almost any culture.

I think they're both beautiful, but I slightly prefer the sparkle in Julia.

They're similarly classic, but Laura to me seems more earthy and calm, and Julia more fiery and colorful. I prefer Julia because I just like the sound of it more.

I much prefer Laura. They don't give me a similar image at all, Laura is wholesome and sweet where as Julia is more extravagant and affected.

Both are good names;I think I prefer Laura.
I don't really get a similar vibe from the names, Julia I find a bit more patrician.
Laura is a bit warmer.
