Penelope
What do you think of Penelope?
I asked in another thread which your favorite and least favorite names in the top 100 are and realized that Penelope is one of my least favorites. Penny is cute, but Penelope makes me think of the words penis and pee plus it has elope in it, even though not in sound. But afterwards I spent some time thinking about it and I was wondering what you all thought of Penelope and Penny.

I really hate it. I think it was used as a faux princess name on the Simpsons, and the only imagery I get from it now pink, sparkly, overly girly, and sickly sweet, which is an image I personally don't like in a name. It sounds like the name of a very stuck up, spoiled, brat who always wants (and gets) her way. She pushes other people/peers around then acts perfect around her parents/authority figures (kind of like Angelica from the Rugrats). I really dislike the sound too, it's so unappealing! I don't like Nel, and the ope bit doesn't help. I actually quite like Calliope, so I think it's just Penelope as a whole. I feel like I should like it, and there are real life Penelope's who aren't anything like the image I get from it, but I haven't been swayed yet. I don't see the appeal.
I go back and forth on this name. I've never associated it with the word penis, but pee is prominent and is probably what makes it iffy to me. I don't like Penny at all. I prefer the nicknames Pen, Nell/Nellie or just P. Parthenope is a guilty pleasure of mine :)

I'm not a fan. It just doesn't seem to wprk for me. A little... awkward sounding?

I've always enjoyed Penelope. I like the myth, the nicknames and the name, and I'd have been happy to use it; left to myself I probably would have, because when my second daughter was born she looked eerily like DH's cousin Penny. But we had a name lined up for her and it couldn't be changed. Given enough daughters, though, I'd have used it for sure.
I'm not that keen on Penelope, it's got an unattractive sound to me, but the main thing that puts me off it is 'Penny'. Just ugh!
I worked with two women called Penelope at the same time, one never shortened her name, which I think is the best way to go with it, and the other was known as Peppy which I thought pretty awful, but not as bad as Penny...
I was amazed to see it on the top 100

I like Penelope a lot. I have to say I have never thought of the word "penis" in association... at all.
As a kid, I was a big fan of "Penelope Pitstop!" the Hanna-Barabara cartoon.
My sister was too, which is probably one of the reasons she named my niece Penelope.
When she used it, no one was using Penelope. However, once the Kardashians used the name, a lot more people remembered it I think. It's not as novel as it was when my niece was born... so it lost some of it's luster for me.
I DO like Penny as a nickname. My sister was going for Penna, but it didn't take. I also know a Nelly and a Nellie. I like those too, but not for Penelope.
