Tobin

I actually feel the opposite. I think Tobias seems a lot more everyday and down-to-earth than Tobin, which seems more pretentious. I know someone with one son named Tobin, and the other names in their family give me that sort of trying-to-be-posh association. I don't mean that in a bad way, though, I sort of enjoy that sort of vibe.
I prefer Toby, I don't really like the -in at the end.
I used to really like all the Tob-names.
Tobiah was my favorite.
I had never thought of Tobin for a boy (I assume you mean it for a boy, since you compared it to Tobias).
Now that I look at BtN, I see it is a masculine name, but I have only ever known one, and she was a girl.
I always thought she had a cool name and never even considered it was a boy's name.
If I think about it, I do like it on girls or boys. It IS less pretentious that Tobias (not that Tobias seems overly pretentious). It is simpler for sure and feels a bit more modern.
Totally usable. Recommendable even.

I think it's an interesting name, and I agree with you that it seems more down-to-earth and to-the-point than Tobias (both in appearance and pronunciation). Not to mention that Tobin doesn't have any unfortunate word associations (that I know of, at least), while Tobias reminds me a little bit too much of the English noun "bias".
Did you know that Tobin is currently the name of a minor character on the American television series "The Walking Dead"? He is a strong man in his 50s (used to be a construction worker before the zombie apocalypse, if I remember correctly), who had a brief fling with Carol until she left her people in order to live by herself as a hermit of sorts. I like what I have seen of the character so far (e.g. he is a gentle man), though he is a little bit bland, but that's part of being a minor character, I guess.

Anyway, I just thought I would point that out, so that you know that at least in pop culture, there is currently a decently mainstream bearer of the name.
