I dislike it. Alphonso might be a bit better, but I still dislike it. I just can't see it on an actual person, except maybe on a weird Historical Fiction author.
I think it's a bit too pretentious a name to go with a middle name that's not as unusable. Like, I don't know, Alphonse Cornelius or Alphonse Crispanius, or Alphonse Lysander. Though while thinking of ridiculous combos, Alphonso Dante came to mind, which doesn't sound that bad to me.
I guess Alfie is a nice-sounding nickname, but I prefer Alfred from Alphonse any day. Someone more risky could go with Alpha or simply A. Those would make stylish and somewhat tasteful choices nowadays.
