Sounds like the name of a stuffy, upper-class old man with a smoking jacket.

It sounds a bit comical to me. It sounds like the name of a cartoon bear who thinks he's posh and clever, but isn't.
If I had to use it, I would spell it Alfonse and use Alfie as a nickname.

Alphonse sounds rather pretentious and wet. Even Fullmetal Alchemist couldn't make me fond of the name. Al is one of the more common nicknames. Fonzie is also a possible nickname, but it sounds sort of sleazy or goofy depending on the person.
Name Combos:
Alphonse Elric - mostly kidding
Alphonse Duvernoy- after the French composer
Alphonse Victor
Alphonse Dietrich
Alphonse Edward
Alphonse Chapanis - after the American pioneer of industrial design and ergonomics
Alphonse Peter
Alphonse Gerard
Alphonse Bastien

I prefer the spelling Alfons. Not a fan of the sound of this name though. Alfons is also the name of a famous children's book character here. That association makes the name childish in my mind.
Alfie would be a cute nickname.
Because of where I live I would never use it in real life. Alfons means pimp in both Danish and Norwegian.

I dislike it. Alphonso might be a bit better, but I still dislike it. I just can't see it on an actual person, except maybe on a weird Historical Fiction author.
I think it's a bit too pretentious a name to go with a middle name that's not as unusable. Like, I don't know, Alphonse Cornelius or Alphonse Crispanius, or Alphonse Lysander. Though while thinking of ridiculous combos, Alphonso Dante came to mind, which doesn't sound that bad to me.
I guess Alfie is a nice-sounding nickname, but I prefer Alfred from Alphonse any day. Someone more risky could go with Alpha or simply A. Those would make stylish and somewhat tasteful choices nowadays.
