Re: Crystal
in reply to a message by ERK
Leslie Dunkling in his Guinness Book of Names claims it was used at the period when jewel names first crept into use, so I suppose it is of longer lineage than might appear. I just think of Crystal Bowersox, who was in American Idol some years ago. I agree it would make a nice winter name but would only use it in the middle. (Sorry for posting this in the wrong place.)

I love Crystal Bowersox! She was my favorite girl contestant that season, and I have both her albums!Anyway, I also agree that Crystal would be cute on a winter baby. :)

The earliest Crystal I found was born in the 1790s. It's been consistently in use since then, mostly female but occasionally on males, like the other jewel-names.

I read somewhere, a long time ago so I forget the details, that Crystal had a history of use on males in Scotland, "because" it was considered or used as a form of Christopher.Have you seen anything to support that? I don't recall seeing it more than just that once, so it might be a flight of fancy.
