It's not Swedish, I've never heard it here. The Swedish word for girl is flicka. I think Svenja sounds too close to "svärja", an old Swedish word for swearing (svära is the word we usually use nowadays).
Sven is an old traditional word for a young man, but pojke is the modern word for boy.

yes, you' re right in thinking, it's the German feminine form of Sven with the Germanic element of svan, meaning swan.
Well, a really nice and cute name, I know some, who called just that.
Others variants are Swenja, Swantje or Swanhild.

I have a friend named Svenja. She pronounces it SVEN-yə. I think it's pretty but not something I'd use.

I like the meaning but I don't think it would work in a country that has English as its primary language.
